The concept of Smart Packaging encompasses all packagings with mechanical, chemical, electrical or electronic characteristics that do not exist in traditional (passive) packaging. It therefore includes all packaging which functions are different or complementary to the basic functions namely:Preserve the integrity and actively predict the deterioration of food (extend the life)

  •     Accentuate and improve the characteristics of the product (appearance, taste, flavor, aroma, etc.)
  •     Actively respond to changes in the product or packaging environment
  •     Communicate product information, product history, or other information to the user
  •     Confirm the authenticity of the product and limit theft and counterfeiting

The materials of Smart Packagings are numerous: film, paper, tray, ink, label, sachet, electronic card ...

Active packaging:

  •     Absorbers which have the objective of removing the undesirable element or elements such as oxygen, excess water, ethylene, carbon dioxide and others ...
  •     Releasers that are meant to include useful elements such as carbon dioxide, water, antioxidants, preservatives.
  •     Other technologies (antimicrobials, edible packaging and temperature compensators ...)

Intelligent packaging:

  •     Information on the product (to the producer, distributor, transporter and consumer) and traceability of food from the producer to the consumer (or even to the recycling of packaging).
  •     Interacting with consumers either by conveying a message or by modifying the food product at their request.
